Chapter 3, verse 6

Dear All,
I much prefer the season of Easter to Christmas because there is no doubt that Jesus was crucified on a cross. There is irrefutable evidence to confirm this and, therefore, my faith in part hinges upon that truth. From that, the resurrection and the transformation of the lives of the disciples, who are touched by the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, seem to be an authentic response.

I used to go on the Walk of Witness on Good Friday but on one occasion, due to ill health, I could not, so instead of walking through the streets of Romford or Harold Hill, I walked through the Bible and looked up every verse which was chapter 3:16.

John 3:16 is probably the most famous verse and is said to contain the whole essence of the Gospel. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Apart from a dodgy start in
Genesis: “To the woman, he said I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing: with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and
he will rule over you.” I found pearls of wisdom in so many chapters 3:16:

Matthew 3:16 states “as soon as Jesus was baptised he went out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened and he saw the spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him.”

2 Timothy 3:16 reminds us “All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.”

To Revelation 3:16, “So, because you are lukewarm – neither hot nor cold – I am about to spit you out of my mouth,” which reminds us to be committed Christians.

For your interest, I offer you my whole Lenten work.

Genesis
To the woman he said, “I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labour you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your
husband, and he will rule

Job
Or why was I not hidden away in the ground like a stillborn child, like an infant who never saw the light of day?

Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honour.

Ecclesiastes
And I saw something else under the sun: In the place of judgment--wickedness was there, in the place of justice--wickedness was there.

Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?

2 Corinthians
